MGS specially-designed telescopic shafts are being manufactured as part of the construction of two new cells at Erin Landfill.
Viridor Waste Ltd secured the services of specialist contractor Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK to construct the new cells and specified the use of MGS shafts. These telescopic extraction and monitoring shafts have proved to be a vital product in Viridor’s successful environmental control of landfill sites for more than 20 years.
Telescopic shafts were developed by MGS in 1998 and were first installed on a Viridor site. The advantage of telescopic shafts is they accommodate the large settlement within landfill waste and provide a long-term solution for monitoring and extraction of leachate.
“We are proud of our position within the UK leachate drainage sector,” explained Division Manager Dave Bland. “Our telescopic shafts were designed to meet the long-term performance required and are now installed in most of the country’s landfills.”
Pictured are slotted drainage pipe, telescopic inner and outer sleeves and base sections, complete with gravel ring and multiple inlets.
It’s the same again! After 15 years of service, Blake Geoservices have replaced their SPT window sampling rig with …. another Tecop.
“As the last one served us so well we have decided to go for a direct replacement from Tecop,” explained Chris Blake.
The rig was delivered by MGS Technical Sales Engineer Chris White last week.
“Blake Geoservices had bought a TECOP TEC10, the original machine, new 15 years ago. It has been so reliable that Chris decided to buy another one. When I heard this, I told Carlos Wagenseil, TECOP’s export director, and he was over the moon. It is great to have loyal customers with repeat business. That’s why we decided I should deliver the machine and meet Chris Blake to thank him in person,” explained Chris White.

MGS hosted a cake sale on Friday and raised £63.16 for the Marie Curie charity.
MGS has been appointed UK distributor for Canadian manufacturer Alucast Industries.
Alucast well covers are gaining popularity as an alternative to standard cast iron covers and, as the name suggests, are made from high quality H-20 aluminium.
“We have done a lot of research and have asked the end user (drillers and engineers) what they would want in a manhole cover. What many end users had wanted were a heavier duty skirt and cover, larger bolts, and an overall better cover. We have taken all of this into consideration and have manufactured a new manhole cover that we believe is the most complete monitoring well cover on the market today,” said Alucast Director of Operations Jeff Garby.
“MGS sees this cover as a significant addition to our range. We are delighted to bring this product to the UK,” said MGS Drilling Division Manager Darren Portway Darren and Technical Sales Engineer Richard Houghton are pictured receiving their official distributor status from Jeff Garby.
Can you win the Core Bit Challenge? That was the question facing visitors to MGS’s stand at Geotechnica last week.
The test was to identify the correct core bit for different ground conditions. Up for grabs were Core Bit Challenge polo shirts and caps to prove who knows their rocks!
“It was a bit of fun and turned out to be really popular. It also gave visitors the chance to see close-up some of the core bits we supply,” said Technical Sales Engineer Chris White.
Also on the stand was the Pagani TG63-150 CPTu rig and TGAS-08 which, together with the new MGS DataHub, transfer data from the field direct to Keynetix Cloud. The rig is then going to Brunel University, in a partnership between MGS and Pagani, where it will be used as part of education, technical development and research.
Also on show was the Tecop TEC 130/130 RAM SPT unit.
The stand was designed to showcase the four cornerstones of MGS’s site investigation business.
- Drilling installation and consumables
- Pagani CPTu and TECOP drilling rigs
- Drilling tooling
- Water monitoring Divers
Geotechnica is the UK’s largest Geotechnical Conference and exhibition and took place at the Warwickshire Event Centre.
