National Heat Pump Week
14 October 2026
National Heat Pump Week is a UK-wide initiative launched by the National Heat Pump Week campaign, led by Heat Pump Association UK (HPA UK) and Nineteen Group, to increase awareness, understanding and confidence in heat pump technology. The campaign brings together manufacturers, installers, suppliers, policymakers and industry experts to share knowledge, showcase innovation and promote the role of heat pumps in the UK’s transition to low-carbon heating.
The campaign highlights the significant contribution heat pumps can make towards reducing carbon emissions and improving energy efficiency as the UK works towards its net zero targets. It also provides an opportunity to address common misconceptions, discuss industry developments and showcase successful real-world installations.
As demand for low-carbon heating solutions continues to grow, National Heat Pump Week helps demonstrate why heat pumps will play an increasingly important role in the future of both residential and commercial heating
Firstly, what are heat pumps?
Heat pumps are highly efficient low-carbon heating systems that transfer naturally occurring heat from the air or ground into a building. Unlike conventional boilers, which generate heat by burning fuel, heat pumps move existing heat energy and use electricity to upgrade it to a useful temperature for heating and hot water.
Because they transfer rather than create heat, heat pumps can deliver several units of heat for every unit of electricity consumed, making them one of the most energy-efficient technologies available for decarbonising buildings.
There are two main types of heat pump:
- Air source heat pumps (ASHPs) extract heat from the outside air, even at low temperatures, and transfer it into a building.
- Ground source heat pumps (GSHPs) absorb stored solar energy from the ground through a network of buried geothermal pipework.
At MGS, we specialise in supporting ground source heat pump installations by manufacturing and supplying the underground infrastructure that enables reliable heat extraction and transfer.
How do ground source heat pumps work?
Ground source heat pumps make use of the stable temperatures that exist beneath the earth’s surface throughout the year.
A closed loop of specialist geothermal pipework is installed within a vertical borehole, where it is surrounded by ground with a naturally consistent temperature. A mixture of water and glycol circulates through this pipework, absorbing renewable heat energy from the surrounding ground.
The warmed fluid returns to the heat pump, where the captured heat is transferred to a refrigerant via a heat exchanger. The refrigerant is then compressed, increasing its temperature before the heat is passed into the building’s heating and hot water system.
After releasing its heat, the cooled glycol fluid is circulated back into the borehole, where the cycle begins again.
This continuous process provides an efficient, reliable and renewable source of heating throughout the year.
The performance of any ground source heat pump system depends heavily on the quality of its underground infrastructure. Borehole heat exchangers, manifolds, distribution pipework and associated ground loop components all play a vital role in ensuring efficient heat transfer and long-term system performance.
At MGS, we manufacture and supply these critical geothermal components, helping installers and developers maximise the efficiency and lifespan of ground source heat pump systems.
What equipment is needed for a ground source heat pump?
While the heat pump is often the most visible part of a ground source heating system, the real performance lies beneath the surface. Every installation requires a carefully designed network of geothermal infrastructure, including borehole heat exchangers, manifold systems, distribution pipework and specialist grouting materials that enable heat to be extracted efficiently from the ground and transferred to the building. As one of the UK’s leading manufacturers and suppliers of geothermal products, MGS provides the critical infrastructure that makes ground source heat pumps possible. From our market-leading Thermo-Loops® and bespoke manifold chambers, geothermal pipework and specialist grouts, our products are trusted on residential, commercial and large-scale energy projects across the UK, helping deliver reliable, long-term low-carbon heating solutions
How is the heat pump industry developing?
The heat pump industry is entering an exciting period of growth as the UK continues its transition towards low-carbon heating. Driven by increasing demand for sustainable energy solutions, supportive government policies and growing awareness of heat pump technology, the sector is expanding rapidly across both residential and commercial markets. Record sales figures in recent years demonstrate the increasing role heat pumps are playing in the UK’s journey towards a lower-carbon future.
For the ground source sector, this growth is driving greater demand for high-quality geothermal infrastructure, from borehole heat exchangers and manifolds to distribution pipework and specialist grouting materials. As a UK manufacturer of geothermal products, MGS is proud to support this transition by supplying the critical infrastructure that underpins efficient and reliable ground source heat pump systems. Through continued innovation, manufacturing excellence and industry collaboration, we are helping build the foundations for the next generation of low-carbon heating projects.
