MGS Begins UK Production of High-Performance Pipes for Ground Source Heat Pumps at Bury St Edmunds Facility

7 July 2025

Bury St Edmunds, UK – MGS, a leading provider of specialist solutions for drilling, drainage, and renewable energy systems, has officially begun manufacturing high-performance pipes for ground source heat recovery at its Bury St Edmunds facility. This move marks a major step forward in the company’s mission to support the UK’s transition to net zero through homegrown innovation and sustainable infrastructure.

With the installation of a state-of-the-art pipe extrusion machine, MGS is now producing pipework specifically engineered for ground source heat pump (GSHP) systems— a key technology in the decarbonisation of heating and cooling. These pipes are designed for exceptional durability, pressure resistance, and thermal conductivity, making them ideal for long-term subsurface use in residential and commercial renewable heating projects.

The new pipe extrusion line was made possible with support from the Business Transition to Net Zero (BNTZ) grant and Suffolk County Council. It allows MGS to bring production of one of its core product lines in-house, significantly strengthening its control over quality, lead times, and supply chain resilience.

“Ground source heat pumps are a cornerstone of low-carbon heating in the UK, and the performance of these systems depends heavily on the quality of the pipework installed,” said Anthony Stupak, Managing Director of MGS. “By manufacturing these geothermal pipes ourselves, we’re not only ensuring the highest standards of reliability and efficiency—we’re reinforcing our commitment to sustainable British manufacturing.”

The move away from importing this type of pipe is part of MGS’s broader strategy to localise its supply chain and support the UK’s clean energy goals. With increasing demand for renewable heating solutions, in-house production allows MGS to respond more quickly to market needs, maintain consistent product availability, and offer enhanced service to installers and project developers.

“Producing our geothermal pipe systems on-site gives us the agility to innovate, scale production, and align directly with the growing momentum in the ground source sector,” added Anthony. “It’s a win for our customers, for our business, and for the UK’s net zero ambitions.”

Established in 1988, MGS has been a trusted supplier of specialist products used in ground investigation, geothermal and water well drilling, railway drainage, and landfill gas extraction. With over three decades of experience supporting large-scale infrastructure and renewable energy projects across the UK, MGS is known for delivering quality, expertise, and engineering excellence.

“With our expanded manufacturing capabilities, recent product launches, and strategic partnerships, MGS is well-positioned to lead in 2025 and beyond,” concluded Anthony. “We’re proud to produce reliable, UK-made solutions that help our customers build a more sustainable future.”
