MGS have welcomed a new apprentice as part of their commitment to supporting local talent and fostering the next generation of skilled professionals.
MGS’ aspiring apprentice, Thomas Portway, has joined as an Apprentice Sales Co-Ordinator, working alongside the Drilling and Geothermal Sales Team based in Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk.
Utilising their strong position in the geotechnical industry, MGS hopes to train and mentor more young workers like Thomas, equipping them with the practical skills and knowledge needed to build a successful future.
“We’re delighted to welcome Thomas to the MGS team and we look forward to seeing him develop his skillset throughout his apprenticeship. As a company that’s over 35 years old, we’ve enjoyed nurturing new talent previously and have provided enthusiastic individuals with great opportunities for growth. We’re confident that Thomas will be an excellent addition to our team” states Anthony Stupak, Managing Director at MGS.
As a part of the apprenticeship scheme with West Suffolk College, Thomas will receive training and education over an 18-month period. Once successfully completed, Thomas will receive a qualification of level 2 customer service practitioner.
Within Thomas’ apprenticeship role, he will be learning to assist customers with sales enquiries, taking and processing orders over the phone and via email, drawing up quotations and liaising with transport companies. Thomas will support the existing sales team and will learn to understand the features and application of MGS’ geotechnical and drilling product range.
“I’m really excited to begin my apprenticeship at MGS! This is a fantastic opportunity to learn from others while gaining hands-on experience in a growing field. I’m eager to dive into my new role and the challenges that lie ahead” states Thomas.
Established in 1988, MGS are a leading manufacturer and supplier of specialist products for use in ground investigation, water well and geothermal drilling applications, railway drainage, landfill gas extraction and more.
With recent commercial successes, the launch of several new products and a promising order book for 2025, MGS are looking to expand their operations while supporting the local community by offering opportunities to aspiring apprentices.
As well as teaching the practical skills to support the role, MGS hopes to impart the importance of geotechnical products and the crucial role they play in supporting drilling, rail infrastructure, sustainable heating and more.
“Our involvement in the apprenticeship scheme is more than just job training – it’s about investing in young talent and the future of our industry. By supporting the next generation of workers, we’re not only helping young professionals grow, but we’re also ensuring that our industry is enriched with bright and innovative individuals for the future” concludes Anthony.
